Having Sex When Pregnant

Submitted by Vanessa on May 5, 2009 – 11:21 amNo Comment

PregnancySome women get turned off by the thought of having sexual intercourse when they are pregnant. For starters, their bodies are going through some extreme changes and they do not always feel so attractive, or they often worry about doing damage to the baby. However, sex during pregnancy is quite safe, as long as there are no current complications, usually all the way to the end. Some people even have sex to induce labor, if a birth is being delayed.

Other women just lose some of their desire to have sex during pregnancy, due to other things on their minds combined with the hormonal changes that they experience. Some do not lose their desire though. Everybody is different, so it is important to always communicate with your partner and that they communicate with you. You will only know what will please each other by talking.

During the first few months, before they start to show and even a while after, many women find it alright to have sex as normal, since there is nothing really to stop them. For those who do not wish to have sex, but have partners with needs, they can always engage in oral sex or manual sex (masturbation). With the use of lubrications, toys and your imagination, you can keep your partner quite pleased and satisfied. He too can reciprocate with the use of toys, hands or tongue. You do not need to miss out just because you’re pregnant and it is a good way to remain intimate with each other and keep the fires of your physical relationship burning!

Some people also worry about the contractions they experience during orgasm, and that it may cause damage, complications or even miscarriage. Unless your doctor advises you to not attempt orgasm due to one reason or another, you will have no problems. The muscle contractions experienced during an orgasm are located inside the vagina, as opposed to uterine contractions felt during labor. But usually there would be no concern about having an orgasm. If in any doubt always consult your doctor!

For those who wish to continue to engage in intercourse however, there are some positions that can make both you and your man feel more comfortable especially during the latter months of pregnancy.
Doggy Style, with you on all fours and your man either kneeling or standing behind you, is perhaps most common with pregnant women. It leaves plenty of room for your stomach, as well as allowing his thrusts to aim upward a little more, thus relieving some of the pressure on your uterus.
Some people also like the cowgirl position. The woman sits atop the man as he lays flat on his back. Reverse cowgirl will work as well. This way will allow your stomach to rest on his and you can gauge your own tempo and depth of penetration too.
Spooning will also take the pressure off your stomach and allow your man to penetrate you from behind. You can control thrusts this way as well, making it less intense and more gentle and pleasurable.
If you would like a more missionary type position, you can try laying on the edge of the bed and letting your man stand between your legs to enter you. He can stand or rest his hands on the bed, thus seeming like he is on top of you, without the weight on your belly. This is an easy and satisfying position.

Whatever position you try remember it’s perfectly natural and safe to continue to have sex during pregnancy and will help strengthen the bond between partners during this special time.
